How does a water softener work?
Hard water is supplied to the timer - and - valve assembly first. Then, it enters the mineral tank where the ion exchange process occurs using resin beads. These beads attract the hard water minerals and exchange them for sodium ions. This leaves soft water which is then supplied to the home through the distributor tube. When the resin bead capacity is depleted, they are recharged by siphoning the salt water for the brine tank. As it passes through the resin, the hard minerals are released through the drain and the process starts over. A float - and - valve - assembly is used for siphon, refill and prevents water from overflowing.
